NUR 136: Nursing Skills Laboratory

This course provides for the practice of nursing skills in a controlled setting in order to gain proficiency for delivery of nursing care in the clinical setting (NUR 121). The content is based on theoretical nursing knowledge taught in NUR 120.

BIO1& 260 with a 2.0 G.P.A or above.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Identify correct interventions for abnormal vital signs or physical assessment findings. (POC.1)
  2. Demonstrate assessment and care of an uncomplicated postpartum couplet. (POC.1)
  3. Explain “Sterile conscience” and its importance. (POC.1)
  4. Identify and demonstrate skills commonly performed in the medical and surgical clinical setting. (POC.1)
  5. Demonstrate safe peripheral administration of Intravenous fluids utilizing a variety of delivery systems. (POC.1)
  6. Perform urinary catheterization and its associated skills. (POC.1)
  7. Practice documentation of interventions implemented. (C)
  8. Demonstrate basic teaching skills for perioperative care (POC.2)

  • Remediate failed Skills Laboratory class within one week.

Additionally, a Dosage Calculation Exam must be passed each quarter with a score of 90% or greater to continue in the program. A student may retake this exam one time only. The Dosage Calculation Exam score is not included in the “Unit Tests” grade.
