Practical application in the clinical setting of nursing theory and skills taught in previous nursing courses and introduced in NUR 120 and NUR 136. Practicum focuses on nursing care to a variety of patients in the medical/surgical, perioperative, and maternal newborn setting.
Prerequisites
BIOL& 260 with a 2.0 G.P.A or above.
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:
- Utilize established nursing protocols while providing care to patients with commonly occurring health conditions. (MOC)
- Develop a plan of care utilizing the patient’s medical diagnosis, medications, and laboratory results. (MOC)
- Demonstrate therapeutic communication with the adult patient in the health care setting. (C)
- Demonstrate beginning proficiency in nursing documentation, using electronic or paper systems. (C)
- Communicate effectively with clinical facility staff. (C)
- Apply principles of cultural awareness in the plan of care for patients with commonly occurring health conditions. (POC.1)
- Demonstrate behavior consistent with standards of performance appropriate to the Level I ADN Student Nurse Role. (P.1)
- Identify a patient learning need. (POC.2)
- Demonstrate beginning delegation skills to unlicensed personnel in a controlled setting. (MOC)
IO1 Communication: Communicate effectively to deliver relevant, accurate and complete information to patients, families, and the healthcare team.
IO2 Quantitative Reasoning: Students will be able to reason mathematically using methods appropriate to the profession.
- Care for patients throughout the lifespan in a variety of settings
- Focused care for patients experiencing perioperative nursing, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, alteration in respiratory function, maternal and newborn nursing, endocrine imbalance, musculoskeletal problems

Additionally, a Dosage Calculation Exam must be passed each quarter with a score of 90% or greater to continue in the program. A student may retake this exam one time only. The Dosage Calculation Exam score is not included in the “Unit Tests” grade.
Assess PO4 Deliver safe and effective physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual care to the whole person in a variety of settings.
PO6 Demonstrate clinical decision-making from a theoretical knowledge base utilizing the nursing process to develop patient care plans that ensure safe, effective care in a variety of settings.
