This is the fifth in a series of five courses exploring values, ethics, and legal decision-making frameworks and policies used to support the well-being of people and groups within the context of the healthcare professions.

Prerequisites

PHIL 202 or instructor permission.

Corequisites

NUR 230 or instructor permission..

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Explore the process of socialization into a healthcare profession.
  2. Using the nursing profession as an examplar, discuss the process of state licensure and the Uniform Disciplinary Act for healthcare providers.
  3. Describe the use of research and evidence based practice information in healthcare.
  4. Evaluate the ethical importance of personal professional development and State continuing competency programs for healthcare providers.

  1. Socialization in the healthcare profession.
    1. Professional resume and interview process.
    2. Strategies to decrease or prevent "reality shock" and professional "burn-out".
    3. Use of the "decision tree" for professional decision making
  2. State licensure and the Uniform Disciplinary Act for healthcare providers.
  3. Research and evidence-based practice.
  4. Continuing education and competency expectations.
