This course is designed to assist students in making the transition from the academic setting to a healthcare work environment. It provides preparation for the NCLEX examination, and information about the professional role of the nurse and the legal and ethical responsibilities related to the practice of nursing in the State of Washington.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:
- Identify the role and responsibilities of the nurse according to the Washington State Law. (P.1)
- Participate in professional development activities (P.1)
- Complete application and preparation for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
- Utilize resources for NCLEX preparation.
- Finalize and submit an academic portfolio.
- Construct a professional resume.
- Discuss the role of the Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission in influencing and regulating the practice of nursing. (P.1)
- Develop a plan to document “Continuing Competency” according to state RCWs and WACs. (P,1)

Department Guidelines
The outcomes for the Nursing program are based on the Core Concepts: Communicator (C); Provider of Care (POC); Manager of Care (MOC); and Professional (P). Progress is assessed throughout the 2-year program culminating in a professional portfolio.
- Communicate effectively to deliver relevant, accurate and complete information to patients, families, and the healthcare team. (C)
- Deliver safe and effective physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual care to the whole person in a variety of settings. (POC.1)
- Plan, initiate, and evaluate patient teaching including assessment of current knowledge, use of appropriate materials and techniques. (POC.2)
- Demonstrate clinical decision-making from a theoretical knowledge base utilizing the nursing process to develop patient care plans that ensure safe, effective care in a variety of settings. (MOC)
- Assume responsibility and accountability in the practice of registered nursing as defined by the professional standards and codes of nursing. (P.1)

Additionally, a Dosage Calculation Exam must be passed each quarter with a score of 90% or greater to continue in the program. A student may retake this exam one time only. The Dosage Calculation Exam score is not included in the “Unit Tests” grade.
