CJ 209: Police Psychology

This course introduces theories of perception, emotion, motivation, personality and nonverbal communication used as tools by police officers in everyday contacts. Understanding behavior and predicting human behavior in common police situations are emphasized. Police family and personal mental health is also covered.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Identify and explain primary human behaviors based on psychology.
  2. Explain the basics foundations of human perception, emotion, motivation and personality.
  3. Apply their knowledge of human behavior and psychology in basic law enforcement scenarios.
  4. Identify how police and criminal justice work can affect them emotionally and psychologically.
Institutional Outcomes
IO1 Communication: Students will be able to execute effective oral and written communication skills related to their discipline (e.g., report writing).
IO3 Human Relations/Workplace Skills: Students will be able to explain ethical decision making and know why high personal ethics is vital in criminal justice.
