CSS 105: Introduction to Healthcare Studies

This course provides the foundation for understanding the educational responsibilities of choosing a career in the healthcare field. Students will identify the scope of education and practice of various members of the healthcare profession in order to develop an educational and career plan. Additional key topics include test-taking preparation, critical thinking, leadership skills, communication styles, ethical decision making, note-taking and study tactics, and accessing reference sources.
Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Apply critical thinking skills in decision making and problem solving.
  2. Describe several personal characteristics that contribute to maintaining good mental and emotional health.
  3. Implement test taking strategies for standardized, proctored, and healthcare-related exams
  4. Describe educational preparation requirements for professions in the healthcare field.
  5. Explain the association among responsibility, accountability, and legal liability.
  6. Incorporate academic, financial, and mental health resources into an educational plan.
  7. Use knowledge of workplace competencies and foundational skills in planning a healthcare related career.
  8. List techniques used to adapt to future changes in the workplace.
  9. Assess leadership and teamwork skills.
  10. Identify principles for ethical decision making.
  11. Discuss the importance of varied communication styles in the healthcare field.
