Beginning German language and culture taught using a communicative approach. Through the use of drama and themes, this course focuses on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and the culture of the German-speaking world.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Speak basic German with standard pronunciation of simple words.
  2. Use third-person present tense verbs in conversations and in writing
  3. Students will recognize past and past perfect verb tenses
  4. Write grammatically correct sentence structures for simple sentences and questions
  5. Read elementary texts and instructions in German
  6. Read, write and aurally comprehend vocabulary pertaining to family members
  7. Write comprehensible compositions in German of gradually increasing length throughout the class
  8. Articulate an understanding of the value to themselves of learning about other cultures.

Course Content Outline
  1. Students will read stories in German of differing lengths to introduce vocabulary and grammar; the stories will be acted out or simply translated
  2. Students will further discuss the stories as a class by answering discussion questions in German
  3. Students will read a novel in German and discuss the content through answering questions in German
  4. Students will create comic strip summaries with illustrations and captions in German
  5. Students will translate various of the stories into English
  6. Students will write compositions of their own in German of gradually increasing length
  7. Students will create a 3-generation Family Tree in German
