Introduction to meta-and para-language areas of manual communication to more esoteric ideographic signs reflecting usage among different regional dialects. Difficulties of communication with more severely language-deprived individuals are discussed. Understanding of deaf culture explored and developed. This course is not meant to prepare students as interpreters for the deaf.

Prerequisites

ASL& 122 or demonstrated competency
Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of receptive and body language at the advanced proficiency level.
  2. Produce expressive and body language at the advanced proficiency level.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of deaf culture.

  1. Review of ASL vocab and adjectives to describe people
  2. Describers, classifiers, review of colors
  3. New vocabulary, negatives and questions, tense indicators
  4. History of American Sign Language
  5. Review and practice for proficiency
Department Guidelines

Quizzes and exams-both written and signed-all questions weighted equally. Grades assigned by percentages according to college standard.
