Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to perform: The basic flying skills, procedures and maneuvers (including elementary navigation) necessary for safe solo flights.
Course Content Outline
  1. AIRCRAFT FAMILIARIZATION
The student shall be familiarized with the training airplane, its operating characteristics, cabin controls, instruments and systems, preflight procedures, use of checklists, and safety precautions to be followed. The student will be instructed in basic flight maneuvers.
  2. AIRCRAFT FAMILIARIZATION
The student shall gain a familiarity with basic flight maneuvers and a familiarity with flight preparation procedures.
  3. ELEMENTARY MANEUVERS
This flight period will be a review of maneuvers and procedures previously introduced plus flight at minimum controllable airspeed, steep power turns, and power-off stalls.
  4. ELEMENTARY MANEUVERS
Review all previous maneuvers; introduce rectangular course, S-turns across a road, turns about a point, power-on stalls, and elementary emergency landings.
  5. REVIEW AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
The student shall be introduced to additional procedures, including the procedures used to change airspeed and configuration of the aircraft at various flight altitudes.
  6. REVIEW AND LANDINGS
Review of previous maneuvers and introduce rejected landing procedures. Take-offs and landings will be accomplished with instructor guidance.
  7. REVIEW
The student shall perform elementary maneuvers and procedures for evaluation and practice in preparation for solo.
  8. REVIEW TAKE-OFF AND LANDING
Review selected maneuvers and procedures; and continue take-off and landing practice.
  9. REVIEW AND SOLO
Student must have completed both preflight and pre-solo written tests prior to solo. When the student displays the required level of safety and competence, the first solo flight will be accomplished.
  10. REVIEW AND SOLO
The student shall review procedures and shall perform the second supervised solo flight when ready.
  11. FLIGHT SIMULATOR
The student shall learn the procedures for operation of the flight simulators, including detection and elimination of carburetor ice, and shall practice elementary maneuvers using both the control and performance method and the primary and supporting method.
  12. REVIEW
The student shall review area work in preparation for the upcoming flight check.
  13. STAGE 1 FLIGHT CHECK
The student shall demonstrate to the check pilot an ability to safely conduct solo flights and exercise the privileges associated with solo operation of the airplane (except oral questioning at intervals during the check).
Department Guidelines

Evaluation is by demonstration of flight proficiency, written test, and completion of home assignments.

Grading:
Satisfactory performance of maneuvers, procedures, written tests, and home assignments. Pass
Unsatisfactory performance of maneuvers/procedures, written test, or home assignments. Fail
