OPD 029: Civics

Class Program

Civics provides students with a practical understanding of the principles and procedures of government. High school completion credit only. Students may earn 0.25-0.50 HS credits. This course may be repeated.

Prerequisites

Students must be enrolled in a Basic Skills class.

Course Outcomes

Students will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills by completing corresponding course module assessments with a seventy-percent (70%) or higher assessment result.

  1. Explain key ideals and principles of the United States, including those in the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and other foundational documents.
  1. Summarize the purposes, organization, and function of governments, laws, and political systems.
  1. Evaluate the purposes and organization of tribal and international relationships and U.S. foreign policy.
  1. Recognize civic responsibilities include voting, paying taxes to support the common good, and participate in resolving issues at the local, state, tribal, and national level.
Program Outcomes

Students will demonstrate an increase in computer literacy and proficiency in using technology for academic and professional purposes.

  • Rights and responsibilities of citizens addressed in the Washington State Constitution and/or United States Constitution
  • Federal, state, tribal, and local government organization and procedures
  • Current civic issues addressed at each level of government
  • Electoral issues, including elections, ballot measures, initiatives, and referenda
