In this course, students will build on the basic techniques learned in ENGL&236 to create imaginative and genre specific writing in fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and/or plays/script. They will create and polish a specific work or works in progress. Students will enhance their own technique by reading and discussing published works of creative writing. They will share their work with the class, critique each other, talk about their own work concisely, and edit their work.
Prerequisites
Complete ENGL&236 with a grade of 2.0 or better or instructor permission
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:
- Create new works and/or continue on works in progress to show an intermediate competence within the techniques of effective use of prose and more structured modes of expression and genre.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills through critiques of others’ work and by engaging critiques of their own writing.
- Clearly identify and contrasting qualities of published and unpublished texts and judging their effect on readers with a deeper understanding and an ability to teach and/or speak to beginning students about the differences.
- Evaluate suggested criticism for editing, analyzing and justifying potential changes in their writing.
IO1 Communication: Students will be able to communicate clearly and effectively.
- The course involves an exploration of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and/or other categories of creative writing, with specific focus on the unique features of each genre being taught.
- For each of these elements, students will:
- Read published works by established writers that demonstrates the technique and skill.
- Discuss these examples in class, including how published works can demonstrate techniques practiced in their own writing styles.
- Complete and share regular in-class, writing exercises that allow for individual practice of these techniques.
- Write formal creative Short Writing Assignments that will be critiqued and edited.
- Students will create a prompt book with started works and show improvement and continuation of a creative writing project.
