HUM 205 Diversity in French- and German-Language Cinema is a survey course that examines French- and German-Language films featuring the experiences of immigrants, women, people living with disabilities and other historically marginalized groups. Students will critically engage with the way that these subjects are portrayed on screen, comparing and contrasting the films’ subjects with their own viewing and life experiences.
IO1 Communication: Students will be able to communicate clearly and effectively.
Week one: class introductions, establishing shared vocabulary for Film Studies and Diversity
Weeks two – nine: One film showing per week with accompanying assignments for critical thinking about different issues of diversity as presented in the films
Weeks 10 and 11: We will wrap up the quarter’s viewing experiences through class discussion and in solo, paired or small group work on a final compare/contrast essay, poster or presentation that will be submitted by the final day of class.
PO4 should be assessed: Students will be able to recognize or articulate personal/interpersonal aspects of, or connections between, diverse cultural, social, or political contexts.
