HSC 020: General Lab-Science

Class Program

This lab course provides basic instruction and lab exposure related to physical, life and earth science content. High school completion credit only. Students can earn 0.25-2.0 high school credits. This course may be repeated.

Prerequisites

Students must be enrolled in a Basic Skills class

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:
1.Identify the purpose of science and demonstrate scientific thinking and method.

2.Apply the steps of scientific method to everyday situations and scientific investigations.

3.Demonstrate basic lab skills through the collection, synthesis, and analysis of data, including creating graphs from data and correctly interpreting the results.

4.Critique information presented online and in media to determine if the information is “scientific and credible”

5.Increase computer literacy and proficiency in using technology for academic and professional purposes

Course Content Outline
  • Nature of science and the scientific method
  • Perform six scientific laboratory experiments using the scientific method, data collection, reporting and
    analyzing results
  • Demonstrate and practice laboratory safety
  • Analyze a variety of source materials, information, articles, media, and scientific announcements to
    determine validity of information as ‘scientific and credible’
