MUSC 260: Percussion Ensemble

This ensemble rehearses, studies, and performs percussion music suitable for performance and/or competition. Scheduled performances and rehearsals are required. May be repeated for up to six (6) credits.

Prerequisites

Instructor permission. Auditions may be required.
Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Demonstrate fundamentals of percussion technique.
  2. Improve recognition of ensemble and section listening by focusing on rhythm, pitch, and musical expression.
  3. Perform quality percussion repertoire from various genres with stylistic accuracy.
  4. Practice sight reading and aural music skills.
Course Content Outline
  1. Technique: Practice appropriate technique for percussion instruments through warm-ups and repertoire.
  2. Repertoire: Examine, assess, and determine appropriate music for performance.
  3. Prepare and Rehearse: Practice, fine-tune, and put together percussion ensemble music. This process will focus on rhythm, pitch, dynamics, phrasing, balance, blend, articulation, rudiments, and technique.
  4. Perform: Present rehearsed percussion literature for a variety of audiences and venues.
  5. Reflect and Refine: Review performance as a collective and individually. From this examination, determine areas for improvement and a course of action to enhance musical skills.
Department Guidelines
  • This class is offered as a lab class.
  • Community members, alumni, and employees of the college are welcome to join through Community Education for no credit.
  • This course may be repeated up to six times.
  • Since students can take the course more than once, a varied repertoire of music is needed for each quarter.
  • To satisfy General Education Outcomes, classroom discussion on the origin of examples and playing styles must be addressed.
  • All students must take part in the performance element.
