This traditional ensemble made up of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments rehearses a wide variety of concert band literature for study and performance. This ensemble will perform quarterly for campus and community events. This course may be repeated for up to six credits.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to hear melodic, harmonic, and rhythmical structure of music through performance.
  2. Distinguish between the various historical musical styles and forms through class discussion.
  3. Demonstrate principals of vocal technique methodology to expand vocal performance skills through performance.
  4. Analyze basic and syncopated rhythms in compound and simple meters through sectionals, rehearsals, and performance.
Course Content Outline
  1. Practice appropriate musical responses to conducting gestures
  2. Critically examine all musical repertoire that is to be performed
  3. Prepare, rehearse and subsequently perform accurately all musical repertoire
    1. Pitch
    2. Rhythm
    3. Dynamics
  4. Apply accurate stylistic elements to the preparation, rehearsal, and performance of all musical repertoire
    1. Phrasing
    2. Balance
    3. Blend
    4. Articulation
    5. Technique specific to your instrument
  5. Amplification of important parts in certain areas
  6. Perform selected musical repertoire in the venue of one or more public concerts
Department Guidelines
  • This class is offered as a lab class.
  • Community members, alumni, and employees of the college are welcome to join through Community Ed for no credit.
  • This course may be repeated for credit up to six times.
  • Since students can take the course more than once, a varied repertoire of music is needed for each quarter.
  • To satisfy the General Education Outcomes, classroom discussion on the origin of examples and playing styles must be addressed.
  • All students must take part in the performance element.
