HSC 015: Career and Technical HS Mathematics

Class Program
The course provides math instruction in applied math concepts to include whole numbers, fractions, decimals, geometrical concepts and shapes, interpreting graphs and charts, statistical information and probability along with algebraic expressions and equations to meet the math skills required for high school graduation. High school completion credit only. May be repeated as needed.

Prerequisites

Students must be enrolled in a Basic Skills class.
Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  • Perform mathematical skills using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
  • Convert between decimals, fractions, mixed numbers and percent
  • Demonstrate mastery of applied mathematics and statistical reasoning
  • Interpret and work with pictures, numbers, and symbolic information
  • Communicate results using a variety of mathematical representations
  • Apply knowledge of basic math concepts and procedures to carry out a task
  • Define and select data used in solving mathematical problems
  • Determine the degree of precision required by the situation
Course Content Outline
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of whole numbers, fractions, decimals and mixed numbers
  • Comprehension of ratios, proportions
  • Number line, positive and negative numbers
  • Basic data analysis and probability including mean, median and mode
  • Graphs, charts, tables and symbolic information
Department Guidelines

This course will satisfy one high school credit for HS21. Exam approved by the college math department will be used for an exit exam. A passing score on this exam is required for credit. Independent study may be approved by instructor on a topic related to mathematics. HS21 & ABE students will demonstrate progression by the number of credits earned during the quarter.
