EDUC 190: Classroom Experience

This course will provide students with the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience working with children infancy to age eight in a variety of educational settings and reflect on their experiences. Students are required to assist a classroom teacher for 99 hours. Prior to registering for this course, students must pass a Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families background check, provide results of a Tuberculin skin test, copy of immunization records, proof of Covid-19 vaccination or an approved religious or medical exemption, and obtain Washington Education Association liability insurance, if applicable.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

Outcomes are aligned with the Washington State Core Competencies for Early Care and Education Professionals (Levels 1-3).

  1. Plan and facilitate developmentally appropriate activities for children in coordination with the classroom teacher (Area II: Curriculum and Learning Environment-Level 3 e, f)
  2. Apply knowledge and skills gained from ECE coursework to experience.
  3. Conduct observations and identify examples of best practice using CLASS tool.
  4. Describe and assess experience through self-evaluation.
  5. Exhibit a high-level of professionalism by adhering to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct (Area VIII: Professional Development and Leadership-3c)

Course Content Outline
  • Orientation (review of syllabus, expectations, paperwork, NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct)
  • Weekly observations and reflective discussions-CLASS dimensions
  • Final project-videotape-modeling CLASS dimension-self-assessment
  • Observations-conducted by instructor (at least two during quarter-more if needed)
  • Conferences-instructor and student (at least one during quarter-more if needed)
  • Evaluations-instructor, cooperating teacher and student
Department Guidelines
  • Students enrolled in EDUC 190 can choose to observe children infancy to age eight in any of the following settings: Licensed childcares, licensed family homes, ECEAP, Head Starts, Early Head Starts, public schools (Sped, K-3). However, placement should be with a different agency and a different age group than placement for ECED& 120 (NAEYC Field Experience requirement)
