DVS 091: BEdA Orientation Course (OPD/HS+/ELA)

The main goal of this course is to assist students as they enter any BEdA program (high school completion or English language acquisition) by giving them the tools they will need to succeed while enrolled in BEdA.

Prerequisites

To enroll in the Open Doors program, students must be at least 16 years old. For the High Schools or ELA program, students must be 18 years old or older.
Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Identify and practice ways to use Canvas, Microsoft Word, and Google Drive.
  2. Identify, define, and practice critical reading, writing and study skills needed to achieve their goal at Big Bend.
  3. Identify, analyze, and practice using college resources to achieve their goals.
  4. Demonstrate how to read a high school credit map or WABERS graduation planner.
  5. Use higher order problem-solving and critical thinking skills to explain why they are in the BEdA program at Big Bend and to write a plan of classes, Big Bend resources, and schedule to achieve their goal of earning a high school diploma.
Institutional Outcomes
1 Students will be able to communicate clearly and effectively.
3 Students will be able to solve problems by gathering, interpreting, combining, and/or applying information from multiple sources.

Department Guidelines
Students must pass each module with a 70% or higher; students must pass every module to earn the credit of study hall elective.
