DVS 090: Transition to College

This Transition to College course is designed to assist advanced ESL/ABE students in developing skills to transition into an academic or vocational program. Students will receive an orientation to the college culture and its services. Students will concentrate on the academic English speaking, reading, writing, presentation and the basic computer skills needed for a successful transition into a credit bearing college program.

Prerequisites

CASAS Reading Level 230 and above.
Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Students will develop academic study skills (RI/RL.6.4, RI.6.7).
  2. Students will develop academic vocabulary, speaking, reading and writing skills (RF.3.c,L.8.6, SL.8.1, SL.8.2, RI/RL.6.3, RI.8.9).
  3. Students will strengthen their technology skills (W/WHST.6-8.5, W.7.6).
  4. Students will design a personal academic, career and financial plan for success (Sl.11-12.5)
Course Content Outline
  1. Students will know how to locate and read class schedules and campus resources.
  2. Students will meet BBCC faculty and support staff.
  3. Students will set short and long-term goals.
  4. Students will use a variety of academic study skills that will include vocabulary, reading, writing, and presentation strategies.

Department Guidelines
50 percent of student submissions must be in academic written format. Students will use BBCC email and CANVAS. Students will give a final presentation of their plan for academic, personal, and financial success. Students will take the college reading Accuplacer placement test before the last week of instruction
