Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge, skill, and aeronautical experience necessary to meet the requirements for a flight instructor certificate with airplane category and single engine class ratings
Course Content Outline
  1. LESSON 1 – RIGHT SEAT FAMILIARIZATION
    Objective: The CFI student shall be familiarized with the training airplane, its operating characteristics, cabin controls, instruments, and systems, preflight procedures, use of the checklist, and safety precautions to be followed.
  2. LESSON 2 – REVIEW AND PRACTICE
    Objective: The CFI student shall enhance his/her understanding and proficiency at flying from the right seat by practicing maneuvers assigned by the flight instructor.
  3. LESSON 3 – PREFLIGHT AND DEMONSTRATION: PROCEDURE, TAKEOFFS, AND LANDINGS
    Objective: The CFI student shall develop the ability to effectively demonstrate the preflight procedure to an assumed student pilot by explaining and teaching the preflight procedure outlined in his/her lesson plan. The CFI student shall develop further proficiency in takeoffs, landings, and maneuvers from the right seat.
  4. LESSON 4 – PROSPECTIVE STUDENT INTRO FLIGHT
    Objective: The CFI student shall attempt to create an enjoyable, informative, and satisfying impression on a new student’s first flight which will convince the perspective student they have chosen a DFI who demonstrates professionalism, courtesy, and behavior conductive to the student’s benefit assuring their continued patronage of your services.
  5. LESSON 5 – TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS, PRIVATE, AND COMMERCIAL MANEUVERS
    Objective: The CFI student shall continue to develop proficiency in takeoffs, landings, and private pilot maneuvers in addition to gaining a familiarity with commercial maneuvers from the right seat. The CFI student shall also further develop the ability to explain, analyze, and teach each maneuver outlined in the lesson plan.
  6. LESSON 6: TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS, COMMERCIAL PILOT MANEUVERS
    Objective: The CFI student shall continue to develop their techniques and become more proficient in takeoffs, landings, and commercial pilot maneuvers from the right seat. The CFI student shall also further their ability to explain, analyze, and teach each maneuver outlined in the lesson plan.
  7. LESSON 7: REVIEW AND PRACTICE
    Objective: The CFI student shall enhance their understanding and proficiency at flying from the right seat by practicing maneuvers assigned by the flight instructor.
  8. LESSON 8: CROSS-COUNTRY PROCEDURES
    Objective: The CFI student shall develop an understanding of and become proficient at cross-country procedures and navigation. The CFI student shall also develop the ability to explain and teach each procedure outlined in the lesson plan.
  9. LESSON 9 – FLIGHT BY REFERENCE TO INSTRUMENTS
    Objective: The CFI student shall develop an understanding of and become proficient at flight by reference to instruments from the right seat. The CFI student shall also develop the ability to explain and teach each maneuver outlined in the lesson plan.
  10. LESSON 10 – EMERGENCY PROCEDURES AND HANDLING AIRCRAFT DISCREPANCIES
    Objective: The CFI student shall develop an understanding of aircraft discrepancies and become proficient in simulating flight emergency procedures. The CFI student shall also develop the ability to explain, teach, and analyze each procedure outlined in the lesson plan.
  11. LESSON 11- NIGHT FLYING (Optional)
    Objective: The CFI student will obtain the instructional knowledge, develop the skill necessary to explain, and teach night flying operations while developing the ability to analyze and correct common student error. (Depending on circumstances, lesson may not be flown--oral presentation only.)
  12. LESSON 12: REVIEW AND PRACTICE
    Objective: The CFI student shall enhance his understanding and proficiency at flying from the right seat by practicing maneuvers assigned by the flight instructor.
  13. LESSON 13: INTRODUCTION TO TAILWHEEL AIRCRAFT, SPIN ENTRY, AND RECOVERY
    Objective: The student shall develop an appreciation for and develop a familiarity with flying a tail wheel airplane. The student shall understand how to recognize, enter, and recover from spins in both directions, and demonstrate the ability to teach and explain each procedure outlined in his/her lesson plan.
  14. LESSON 14: TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS IN TAILWHEEL AIRCRAFT (May be deleted if tailwheel aircraft unavailable. )
    Objective: The student shall gain an increased understanding of and proficiency in takeoffs and landings in a tailwheel airplane.
  15. LESSON 15: SPINS, TAKEOFF, AND LANDING REVIEW
    Objective: The student shall develop the ability to demonstrate, explain and teach spins, takeoffs, and landings in a tailwheel airplane.
  16. LESSON 16: REVIEW DUAL AND PIC (May be deleted if tailwheel aircraft unavailable.)
    Objective: The student shall gain the proficiency and understanding needed to act as PIC in a tailwheel airplane.
  17. LESSON 17: FAMILIARIZATION COMPLEX AIRPLANE
    Objective: The CFI student shall become familiar with a complex airplane, F-33A, or C-180/Amphibian.
  18. LESSON 18 – TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS AND MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE MANEUVERS
    Objective: The student shall build skill and proficiency in flying a complex airplane, and develop the ability to explain, teach, and analyze each procedure outlined in the lesson plan.
  19. LESSON 19 – REVIEW AND PRACTICE
    Objective: The student shall gain further proficiency in various maneuvers, and continue to develop the ability to explain, teach, and analyze each procedure or maneuver.
  20. LESSON 20 – REVIEW AND PRACTICE
    Objective: The student shall complete the final practice of maneuvers in preparation for the phase check, including the explanation of each maneuver while analyzing and correcting any deficient performance.
  21. LESSON 21 – PRACTICE ORAL PREP – PRIVATE AND COMMERCIAL
    Objective: The CFI student shall conduct practice oral preparations at both the private and commercial levels, correcting any substandard performance by the assumed students.
  22. LESSON 22: REVIEW OF CFI SUBJECT MATTER AREAS
    Objective: The CFI student shall review all subject matter areas listed in the appropriate flight instructor practical standards.
  23. LESSON 23: FINAL PHASE CHECK
    Objective: The CFI student shall demonstrate the ability to effectively conduct a flight lesson and perform standard flight training maneuvers, accurately analyze student pilot errors, and correct those errors.

*Note: In the event of non-availability of tailwheel airplane, a spinnable B19 will be used. (Ref: Lesson 13 & 15).

Department Guidelines

Evaluation is by in flight demonstration of flight proficiency, oral examination of aeronautical knowledge and completion of home assignments.

Grading:
Satisfactory performance of maneuvers I/A/W FAA Practical Test Standards, satisfactory oral explanation I/A/W FAA Practical Test Standards and at least 70% on home assignments Pass
Substandard Performance of maneuvers or oral explanations as defined by FAA Practical Test Standards, or less than 70% on home assignments Fail
