This course is an overview of safety in the agricultural industry by identifying safety hazards, applying procedures, analyzing safety rules and regulations. Emphasis will be placed on the relation to agricultural operations, technological changes, workplace violence, ethics, diversity, and personal/organizational responsibilities. This course will also focus on agricultural chemical applications, proper pesticide and fertilizer use. Upon completion of this course, students will be prepared for their Washington State Commercial Applicator License Exams.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge or skills:

  1. Identify safety hazards.
  2. Interpret laws and regulations pertaining to safety and health in agriculture.
  3. Illustrate and apply safety procedures.
  4. Complete a practice exam in preparation for the Washington State Pesticide Commercial Applicator licensing or Commercial Pest Control Consultant licensing exams.
  5. Select appropriate agricultural chemical and pesticide safety and handling procedures.
  6. Read pesticide labels.
  7. Identify insect and weed problems.
  8. Examine worker safety issues.
  9. Evaluate safety plans.
  10. Conduct an incident investigation.
